OYS supply to finalists in the World Superyacht Awards

Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS) was delighted to hear the news that four of its customers have been nominated as finalists as part of the 2012 World Superyacht Awards.

In the 40m+ sailing yacht category the 56m Perini Navi Fidelis is equipped with OYS rigging and hydraulic sail control cylinders. Hetairos, the innovative 66m  Baltic Yacht has also been nominated with her unique OYS retractable propuvertigolsion system and finally the beautifully 67m Alloy yachts built Vertigo has been nominated with her custom OYS carbon fibre vang cylinder. In the 30m to 40m category Antares III, designed by Bill Dixon and built by Yachting Developments Ltd, has a superlight OYS vertical retracting bow thruster and a swing retracting stern thruster, custom designed for her unique requirements.

When any superyacht reaches the final in such a prestigious award, it marks recognition for the designers, builders and the suppliers in what they have achieved.  For OYS this is an acknowledgement of the success of the changes the company has made over the last 5 years. OYS have extended their company offerings beyond Rod (Nitronic 50 Steel), Kevlar and alternative lightweight composites rigging to designing, engineering and manufacturing thrusters, hydraulics and complete propulsion systems for the superyacht marketplace.

3D sonar deployment system

Reson_websiteOcean Yacht Systems (OYS) have designed, engineered and manufactured a retractable sonar leg solution for a 35m commercial vessel.  The accuracy of the 3D maps, from the surveys taking place onboard R/V Prince Madog have significantly improved as a result of this equipment installed by OYS.

Having come to the realisation they were regularly making changes to the sonar legs from their current supplier, Reson approached OYS looking for a solution.  OYS are experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to finding customised solutions that are cost effective.

The issue
The sonar being installed was a Seabat 7125 by Reson.  It is used for a variety of surveys including pipeline inspection, topographical surveys, general surveys and surveying wrecks. With an inbuilt GPS and software, multiple passes can be performed over a site to build up an accurate 3D map/image of the subsea surface. All of this technology relies on the accuracy of the installation of the sonar, which if not held robustly in place, will not produce clear enough images.

The solution
OYS has designed and engineered an hydraulic leg, that with the sonar deployed, will sit firmly in its position.  In this position an area can be accurately surveyed multiple times, as the sonar can be correctly calibrated to achieve the highest resolution. The leg includes an OYS designed ‘Flow Plate’ which closes the hole the sonar retracts into, this reduces turbulent water flow around the sonar in operation.

The result
With the help of the knowledge and expertise at OYS, R/V Prince Madog is now producing 3D maps of subsea areas at the highest accuracy.

Hetairos the ultimate in superyacht propulsion

Heitaros_copySince 2009, OYS have been working in conjunction with Baltic Yachts and Marine & Hydraulics in Finland to custom design and manufacture a state of the art hydraulic propulsion system for the newly launched Hetairos.

With a facade of something you would expect to see on an old British Cutter Pilot boat, reality could not be further from first appearances. This magnificent Superyacht uses the most ultra modern day composite materials available, to ensure performance in comfort and style. Built to the owner requirements to have a Superyacht with a classic look, yet that was the largest and fastest possible yacht capable of passing through the Panama Canal.  As such you would be lead to believe her transom is made of the finest teak, yet this is actually carbon fibre, saving 100kg of weight. This is just one example of how modern materials have been used on this magnificent Superyacht.

OYS have supplied 2 x 460hp hydraulic swing down retractable primary drives for Hetairos, the first of their kind in the world. Combined they generate over 14knts under power and provide a bollard pull in excess of 1100kgf. The units themselves rotate 360 degrees and are positioned either side of the centreline just aft of the keel, providing incredible manoeuvrability. Hetairos is built for performance, whether under sail or power, and therefore these hydraulic powered units fully retract into the hull within seconds when not in use, leaving a completely flawless hull as per the designs of Gerard Dykstra & Partners in association with Reichel Pugh Yacht Design.

OYS custom design, engineer and manufacture Sail Drive systems from 30-600hp on a project by project basis. They can be powered through hydraulics, electric or direct drive couplings, which deploy the leg drive through a vertical or swing down motion, all of which can rotate through 360 degrees. OYS will produce a product exactly to your requirements.

At 66.7m, Hetairos has been designed for performance, Baltic Yachts have entered new territory with her propulsion system and OYS and proud to be part of such a fine Superyacht.
